King’s Chapel

Founded in 1686 and built on Boston’s oldest burying ground, King’s Chapel became New England’s first Church of England parish. The current granite building, completed in 1754, remains an architectural landmark. Following the American Revolution, the congregation broke from the Church of England and became the first Unitarian church in the United States, revising its liturgy while continuing to use the historic space. Today, King’s Chapel is an active Unitarian Christian congregation and National Historic Landmark that invites the public to engage with over three centuries of layered history. Through tours, programs, and a Memorial to Enslaved Persons, the church confronts its ties to slavery and colonialism while lifting up its ongoing commitments to justice, inclusion, and truth-telling.
