Plaza Betances

South End, Boston

The cultural heart of Villa Victoria, a historically Puerto Rican neighborhood formed through community resistance to urban renewal in the 1960s. Named after Ramón Emeterio Betances—an abolitionist and key figure in Puerto Rico’s independence movement—the plaza stands as a symbol of resilience and self-determination. Today, it hosts Festival Betances, one of New England’s longest-running Latinx cultural celebrations. As we mark 250 years of American history, Plaza Betances reminds us that the story of revolution and freedom must include the experiences of Latinx, Afro-Caribbean, and working-class communities who have long shaped Boston’s identity.
