United South End Settlements (USES)

South End, Boston

Founded in 1892   In the late 19th century, the South End was home to several settlement houses as part of a broader urban reform movement dedicated to supporting the needs of local communities. The first of these organizations in Boston was Andover House, founded in 1892. In 1960, the settlement houses across the South End merged to form United South End Settlements (USES), uniting their efforts to better serve neighborhood residents. Since then, USES has continued the legacy of the settlement house movement by providing programs that foster children’s growth, strengthen families, and equip communities with the tools for positive change. This work has been guided by a vision of a future in which all children are safe, healthy, and able to thrive at home, in school, and in their communities.
