“Paul Cuffe Is Me”

Lyrics by Daniel Laurent, music by Roy Studmire, and dancers from Brickhouse NYC

Paul Cuffe Is Me is a music video and visual introduction to The Cuffe Project, a narrative film and series in development about Paul Cuffe, a Black and Wampanoag shipowner, entrepreneur, and abolitionist who lived in Massachusetts in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The intention of this piece is to bring Paul Cuffe out of the shadows of history and into the light of our shared consciousness. Though his story has largely been erased, Cuffe’s values were radical then and remain urgent now: community first, shared prosperity, and the belief that individual success means little if it is not distributed for the good of others.

A Mystical Ornithology

Directed by Jeremy Seifert and Benjamin James Roberts

Immersed in the songs of blue jays, yellow-throated warblers, and red-shouldered hawks on his forty-six-acre farm in rural South Carolina, acclaimed poet and ornithologist J. Drew Lanham exchanges calls with the birds that stop over at his home during their seasonal migrations. For Drew, these creatures are gods, transcendent beings who summon a response of reverence. Reverberating with sound, music, light, and ethereal cinematic expression, A Mystical Ornithology weaves a kinetic texture for the senses and invites you into a poetic evocation of the paradox of love and grief within the changing nature of the seasons.
