BRL88: People Before Highways Day

Join the Afrimerican Academy , Embrace Boston & the 54th Regiment for People Before Highways Day, a commemorative meeting honoring Boston’s legacy of community resistance and visionary planning.
On Sunday, January 25th, 2026, at 2:00 PM, we’ll gather at the Massachusetts State House retracing the historic path of civic courage that helped stop the Inner Belt highway project and saved neighborhoods like Cambridgeport, Jamaica Plain, and Roxbury from destruction.
This year’s theme — “Claim Our Space” — continues the call for development without displacement. The meet up marks the official opening of BRL88, the Afrimerican Academy’s annual Black History Month Event Series, uniting storytelling, urban design, and cultural restoration across Boston’s neighborhoods.
